PULLMAN, Wash. - Kyle Anderson totaled 19 points and 11 rebounds as UCLA lost at Washington State, 73-55, in its final regular-season game in Beasley Coliseum on Saturday evening.
The Bruins (23-8, 12-6 Pac-12) opened the game on a 9-0 scoring run and maintained a 15-5 lead with 14:08 to go before the break, but the host Cougars (10-20, 3-15) outscored UCLA by a 29-11 margin to close the first half and secure a 34-26 cushion at halftime.
Anderson logged his conference-leading 15th double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds), while Bryce Alford was UCLA’s only other double-digit scorer, finishing with 10 points.
Que Johnson and Ike Iroegbu each scored a team-leading 14 points for Washington State. Dexter Kernich-Drew and D.J. Shelton logged 10 points apiece to round out the Cougars’ list of four double-digit scorers. Shelton grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for Washington State.
Trailing by eight points at halftime, UCLA emerged from intermission by reducing Washington State’s advantage to five points (34-29) at the 18:20 mark. The Bruins never got any closer from that point in the second half.
Washington State pushed its margin to 16 points (45-29) on a 3-point basket from Johnson with 14:40 left in regulation.
The Bruins opened the game making four of their first five shots, but finished the opening half having made three of their final 16 field goal attempts. UCLA scored a season-low 55 points while being limited to a 33.3 overall field goal percentage.
UCLA will return to action as the No. 2-seeded team in next week’s Pac-12 Tournament at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Bruins will play on Thursday, March 13, at 6:00 p.m. against the winning of Wednesday’s matchup featuring No. 7-seed Oregon and No. 10-seed Oregon State.
