UCLA has received a huge commitment from 2021 wing Peyton Watson from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly.

Watson is a five-star prospect and the No. 8-ranked player nationally by 247Sports. He's the No. 3 small forward and the No. 1 player in California.

It's a recruiting coup for UCLA and Mick Cronin, securing the verbal commitment from Watson over Arizona, Washington, USC, Oregon, Michigan and others.

It sends a signal, too, with UCLA getting the No. 1 2021 prospect in California, that UCLA recruiting is back as a primary competitor for the best prospects in the state.

It's UCLA's second commitment in the 2021 class, with Watson joining four-star guard Will McClendon from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman.

UCLA will now focus on point guards and post players to fill out the remainder of its 2021 class. It officially has just one scholarship open for the 2021-2022 season, but would take two more commitments from an elite point guard and a big.

It's Cronin's second five-star commitment since arriving at UCLA.  Five-star 2020 point guard Daishen Nix verbally committed to UCLA last year before opting for the G League Select this spring.

It's believed that Watson, who has some tremendous upside, probably wouldn't have the G League Select as such a viable option since he still has some physical development in front of him.

247Sports' Josh Gershon says this of Watson: "Small forward with good size, long arms and plus athleticism. Still very physically immature; plenty of room to gain strength in coming years. Has been on significant upwards trajectory since start of high school career. Extremely versatile defender due to size, length, athleticism, instincts and motor. Nice feel as rebounder and weak side shot blocker. Offense has continuously improved due to progress with ball skills and jumper. Very good vision for position. Easy high-major starter who should be a first round pick if he continues to improve at same rate."
