ST. LOUIS - UCLA’s Kevon Looney has secured Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week honors for games ending the week of Jan. 11. Looney, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two wins last week.
Earlier this season, Looney (13.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg) was named to the 22-man Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award watch list. He has scored in double figures in 13 of UCLA’s 17 games and currently ranks No. 12, nationally, in rebounds per game. In addition, Looney ranks fourth in the country in total rebounds.
Last week, Looney totaled 27 points and 19 rebounds in the Bruins’ 86-81 double overtime win over Stanford on Thursday night. The Bruins erased a 14-point deficit in the game’s final 10 minutes to defeat Stanford. Three nights later, Looney tallied 15 points and seven rebounds in UCLA’s 73-54 win against California.
UCLA (10-7, 2-2 Pac-12) returns to action at USC (9-7, 1-3 Pac-12) on Wednesday evening. Game time at USC’s Galen Center is 6 p.m. (PT). UCLA’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
