CORVALLIS, Ore. - Bryce Alford scored a team-leading 18 points and Norman Powell logged his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as UCLA dropped a 66-55 decision at Oregon State on Thursday night.
Playing for the first time in eight days, UCLA saw its three-game winning streak end before 6,024 in Gill Coliseum.
The Bruins (11-8, 3-3 Pac-12) reduced a 17-point deficit to three points in a five-minute span late in the second half. Trailing by a 47-30 margin at the 9:27 mark, UCLA used an 18-4 scoring run over the next five minutes to pull within three points – 51-48 – with 4:36 to play.
G.G. Goloman nailed a deep two-pointer for UCLA at the 4:36 mark, cutting Oregon State’s cushion to 51-48. After Oregon State’s Malcolm Duvivier made one of two free throws, Goloman helped UCLA reduce OSU’s lead to 52-50 with a layup at the 2:35 mark.
Oregon State’s Olaf Schaftenaar responded with a 3-pointer, helping the Beavers take a 55-50 lead with 2:12 to go. From that point, the Bruins were unable to close the gap to fewer than five points.
Gary Payton II scored 18 points and finished with seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for Oregon State (13-5, 4-2), which improved to 11-0 in home games this season. Duvivier scored a game-high 19 points, connecting on 11 of 12 free throw attempts.
Schaftenaar totaled 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range, and Langston Morris-Walker tallied 10 points to round out the Beavers’ list of double-figure scorers.
The Bruins received 10 points and 11 rebounds from Kevon Looney, who recorded his 10th double-double in 19 games.
UCLA trailed by a 29-19 margin at halftime, having shot just 23 percent in the first half. The Bruins finished Thursday’s game shooting at a 30.6 percent clip.
UCLA freshman Thomas Welsh made his first career start in place of the injured Tony Parker (back spasms, day-to-day). Welsh, who has played in all 19 games off the bench this season, finished with eight points, five rebounds and one block.
Goloman scored a season-high six points, making 3 of 3 shots and logging a season-best four steals.
The Bruins return to action at Oregon on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. UCLA’s game at Oregon will be nationally televised by CBS.
