AGAINST THE MOCS
UCLA continues regional round action of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational on Sunday against Chattanooga. The Bruins and Mocs have never faced each other on the basketball court. Chattanooga lost at Nevada, 83-81, on Friday evening, as Nevada guard Deonte Burton nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Chattanooga, which finished 13-19 last season, is led by first-year head coach Will Wade, who previously served as an assistant coach at VCU.
FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP
The Bruins improved to 4-0 with an 81-70 victory over Morehead State on Friday, Nov. 22. Jordan Adams scored a career-high 30 points and Kyle Anderson logged his first collegiate triple-double (13 points, 12 rebounds, career-high 11 assists). Adams led the Bruins in scoring for the fourth consecutive game. He became the first UCLA player to eclipse the 30-point plateau since Dec. 2, 2010 (Tyler Honeycutt, 33 points, at No. 4 Kansas).
STRONG START
UCLA last started a season 4-0 in 2007-08, when the Bruins opened that year with seven straight victories. As head coach at New Mexico last season, Steve Alford guided the Lobos to a 12-0 start.
TRIPLE THREAT
Kyle Anderson registered the third triple-double on record in school history last Friday, UCLA’s first triple-double since Dec. 18, 1995, when Toby Bailey had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Stephen F. Austin. Anderson clinched the triple-double with his 10th assist, a dish to Jordan Adams who knocked down a shot to finish with 30 points. Anderson had previously come three assists shy of a triple-double in three games (twice last season).
LOOKING BACK
Since the assist became an official stat in 1983-84, UCLA has just two triple-doubles on record – Toby Bailey’s on Dec. 18,1995 and a point-rebound-block triple-double by Jelani McCoy against Maryland on Dec. 9, 1995. McCoy registered 15 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks versus the Terrapins.
LAST MONDAY’S VICTORY
The Bruins improved to 3-0 with an 86-50 victory over Sacramento State on Monday, Nov. 18. Jordan Adams led the team in scoring for the third consecutive game, totaling 21 points and a career-high eight steals. David Wear (12 pts, 10 rbs) registered his first double-double of the season. Norman Powell and Zach LaVine each scored 14 points, while Tony Parker added 10 points. Kyle Anderson finished with eight assists against Sacramento State.
PICKED HIS POCKET
Jordan Adams’ career-high eight steals against Sacramento State are the most in any game by a UCLA player since Nov. 28, 2006, when Darren Collison had nine in a non-conference home victory against Long Beach State. Adams had seven steals in one game last season and five steals in three contests.
BY THE NUMBERS
With four games under their belt, the Bruins have opened the year shooting at a 50.4 percent clip. Tony Parker has logged a team-high 69.2 field goal percentage (18-of-26), while Norman Powell has made 58.6 percent of his field goal attempts (17-of-29). UCLA has limited its opposition to a 34.9 field goal percentage and a 26.4 percent from three-point territory (28-for-106). Jordan Adams leads the team with a 47.8 three-point field goal percentage.
GETTING IT DONE
Kyle Anderson has filled the stat sheet for UCLA, producing team-highs in rebounds (9.8 rpg), assists (8.0 apg) and assist turnover ratio (4.6). Anderson registered a career-high 11 assists and just one turnover en route to producing a triple-double against Morehead State on Friday evening.
DOUBLE DIGITS
This marks the second consecutive season in which Jordan Adams has opened the year scoring in double digits in each of UCLA’s first four games. Last November, Adams became the first freshman in program history to score at least 20 points in his first four collegiate contests. This season, he scored 16 against Drexel (Nov. 8), 22 versus Oakland (Nov. 12), 21 against Sacramento State (Nov. 18) and a career-high 30 versus Morehead State (Nov. 22). He has scored at least 10 points in 29 of 37 collegiate games, reaching the 20-point plateau in 14 contests.
WHO’S BACK
Ranked No. 22 in this week’s Associated Press poll, UCLA returns to the court this fall with six of its primary eight contributors from last season’s team. Three of UCLA’s five starters return from last season’s team – sophomoresJordan Adams and Kyle Anderson and senior Travis Wear – along with senior David Wear, junior Norman Powelland sophomore Tony Parker, who each played at least 33 of 35 games for UCLA last season.
YOUNG LINEUP
UCLA’s roster includes five freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors and four seniors. Senior twin brothers Travis and David Wear have each played over 90 collegiate games (includes UCLA and North Carolina). Junior Norman Powell has played in more games (71) in a UCLA uniform than any other current player.
INSTANT OFFENSE
Affectionately dubbed “instant offense” by classmate Kyle Anderson, sophomore Jordan Adams has scored in double figures in 29 of his 37 career games. Adams averaged 15.3 points per game last season and scored a career-high 30 points last Friday against Morehead State. Adams has led UCLA in scoring 17 times (16 times by himself, once tied with two teammates) over the team’s last 39 games. He has led the Bruins in scoring in all four games this year.
INJURY REPORT
Freshman Noah Allen suffered multiple fractures to his face after a collision with one of Oakland’s players on Nov. 12. He underwent surgery on Nov. 14. A timetable for his return has not been determined. Freshman Wanaah Bailunderwent left knee surgery to repair torn cartilage on June 28. He was cleared for limited contact in practice last week and could return to the lineup the final week of November. Senior Travis Wear underwent appendectomy surgery on Oct. 28, missed the first three regular-season games and returned against Morehead State on Friday, Nov. 22.
AT THE HELM
Steve Alford was named the 13th head coach in UCLA men’s basketball program history on March 30, 2013, after six highly-successful seasons as head coach at the University of New Mexico. A former NCAA Champion at Indiana University (1984-87) and starter on the United States’ gold medal-winning 1984 Olympic Team, Alford has served as head coach at Manchester College (1992-95), Missouri State (1996-99), Iowa (2000-07) and New Mexico (2008-13).
