UCLA Bruins leading scorer Shabazz Muhammad has been named a freshman All-American by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Muhammad, a 6-6 guard/forward, leads all freshmen in scoring with 18.3 points per game and was a first-team All Pac-12 selection and the co-freshman of the year in the conference after helping lead No. 21 UCLA (23-8) to the regular season title. The Bruins open play in the Pac-12 tournament Thursday at noon in Las
Vegas.
He is joined on the freshman All-American team by Anthony Bennett (UNLV), Ben McLemore (Kansas), Nerlens Noel (Kentucky) and Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State). Smart was voted the Wayman Tisdale Award winner given annually to the nation’s top freshman.
