MORE ABOUT THE BRUINS
- UCLA has just three regular-season games remaining on its schedule, all to be played at home … the Bruins have played six games this season against top-15 ranked teams, the most of any Pac-12 school (AP poll) … after having lost five consecutive games midway through the season, UCLA won eight of its next 11 contests.
- Per KenPom.com, UCLA has played the nation’s No. 7 most difficult schedule (highest of any Pac-12 program) … also, KenPom.com has rated UCLA as having faced the No. 3 combined best “opposing defense” (an average of its opposing teams’ defensive efficiency ratings).
Norman Powell (15.8 ppg) and Bryce Alford (15.6 ppg) have accounted for 45 percent of UCLA’s total scoring …Kevon Looney (9.5 rpg) and Tony Parker (6.8 rpg) have registered 41 percent of the Bruins’ total rebounds … UCLA and Georgia are the nation’s only two schools to have faced No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Gonzaga this year.
WEDNESDAY’S MATCHUP
The Bruins have not faced Washington this season and only faced the Huskies in one game (in Seattle) during the final regular-season weekend last season. UCLA will close its regular-season schedule over the next two weeks with consecutive home games against Washington (Feb. 25), Washington State (March 1) and USC (March 4). UCLA has won each of its last three games against the Huskies and four of the last five contests in the all-time series.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bruins dropped a pair of Pac-12 road games last week, losing at Arizona State, 68-66, on Wednesday before falling at No. 7 Arizona, 57-47, on Saturday. In the loss at Arizona, the Bruins overcame a 14-point halftime deficit by scoring the first 17 points of the second half to claim a 35-32 advantage. Arizona led 44-43 with 5:42 to play before Gabe York nailed a 3-pointer to push the Wildcats’ cushion to four points. UCLA was unable to close the gap to fewer than four points the rest of the way. Bryce Alford totaled a game-high 22 points on 7 of 13 shooting.
POWELL’S PRODUCTION
Norman Powell enters the week ranking sixth in scoring in the Pac-12, having averaged 15.8 points per game (28 starts). The 6-foot-4 guard from San Diego has scored in double figures in 23 of UCLA’s 28 games, reaching the 20-point plateau in 11 contests. Powell scored a team-leading 23 points to help the Bruins defeat Oregon, 72-63, in Pauley Pavilion on Feb. 14. He ranks seventh among Pac-12 players with 16.4 points per game in conference games (through Feb. 22). Powell played in his 133rd game for UCLA last Saturday evening at Arizona.
FRESHMAN STANDOUT
Kevon Looney enters this Wednesday’s contest having averaged 12.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, the second-highest rebounding average of any freshman, nationally (through Feb. 22). Likewise, Looney has logged 13 double-doubles in 28 games, the highest double-double total of any freshman in the country. In comparison, UCLA’sKyle Anderson had eight double-doubles as a freshman (2012-13) and 16 double-doubles last year. Looney has scored in double figures in 11 of the Bruins’ last 13 games and has registered double-doubles in six Pac-12 games.
POINTS AND ASSISTS
Bryce Alford ranks second on the team in scoring (15.4 points per game) and has dished a team-best 5.1 assists per game in 28 starts (fourth-highest assist average in the Pac-12). The 6-foot-3 guard from Albuquerque, N.M., has scored in double figures in 24 of 28 games. He is one of two Pac-12 players (along with Washington’s Nigel Williams-Goss) to rank among the top 10 in scoring and top five in assists per game. Alford ranks third in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (84.6 pct, 99-for-117) and second in 3-pointers made per game (2.4).
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Norman Powell has played in all 133 games for UCLA since the start of the 2011-12 season. Powell, who has started each of UCLA’s last 67 games, currently ranks fifth on UCLA’s all-time games played list, having moved past Mitchell Butler (131 games, 1990-93) on Feb. 14. Michael Roll ranks first on the list (147), followed by Darren Collison and Alfred Aboya (142). Powell’s career total of 146 steals is tied for 10th place on the school’s all-time steals list (Ed O’Bannon and Gerald Madkins also registered 146 career steals at UCLA).
