TEMPE, Ariz. - Norman Powell scored 16 points while Kevon Looney and Bryce Alford each added 14 as UCLA dropped a 68-66 decision at Arizona State before 7,873 at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday.
The Bruins (16-11, 8-6 Pac-12) led by as many as 10 points late in the first half and carried a 36-32 lead to the locker room at halftime. But the host Sun Devils (14-12, 6-7 Pac-12) shot nearly 53 percent in the second half and secured a 66-60 lead in the game’s final two minutes, holding on for the Pac-12 victory.
Savon Goodman scored a team-leading 20 points for Arizona State, connecting on all eight of his field goal attempts, and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Shaquielle McKissic scored 14 points and Tra Holder had 13, rounding out Arizona State’s list of double-figure scorers.
Trailing by a 66-60 margin at the 1:41 mark, UCLA closed the gap to 67-66 with eight seconds to go. After Arizona State’s Jonathan Gilling made one of two free throws to make it 67-64 with 19 seconds remaining, the Bruins cut ASU’s margin to 67-66 on a layup from Isaac Hamilton, who finished with 13 points.
With seven seconds to play, Alford fouled Holder, who went to the free throw line and missed his first attempt before sinking the second.
Playing with no timeouts remaining, the Bruins had Powell carry the ball up the length of the court on the game’s final possession. Powell drove near the baseline and passed the ball to Hamilton, who missed a potential game-winning 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded.
Wednesday night’s game featured three ties and 17 lead changes. The Bruins led for the final time, 57-56, at the 5:36 mark. Gerry Blakes made a layup with 5:12 remaining to give Arizona State a 58-57 cushion before Bo Barnes nailed a 3-pointer with 4:04 to play.
The Sun Devils won the rebounding battle by a 39-27 margin, marking just the seventh time this season in which UCLA was out-rebounded.
UCLA has four regular-season games remaining, with its final road contest coming up at No. 7 Arizona on Saturday evening. The Bruins’ game at Arizona will be nationally televised by ESPN and is slated for a 6 p.m. PT start (7 p.m. MT).
