UCLA’s Kevon Looney has been selected as one of 22 players to the initial watch list for the 2014-15 Wayman Tisdale Award, which honors the nation’s top freshman, as announced Monday by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
A 6-foot-9 forward from Milwaukee, Wis., Looney has averaged 14.8 points and 12.0 rebounds per game through UCLA’s first four contests. He ranks eighth in the nation in rebounds per game and is the nation’s top freshman rebounder (through games played Sunday, Nov. 23).
Looney has become the first UCLA freshman to ever record three double-doubles in his first four collegiate games. He grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds in back-to-back victories against Coastal Carolina (Nov. 16) and Nicholls State (Nov. 20).
No. 22-ranked UCLA returns to the court against Oklahoma in the Battle 4 Atlantis (Paradise Island, Bahamas) on Wednesday. Game time is 11:30 a.m. (PT)/2:30 p.m. (ET). UCLA’s game versus Oklahoma will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
