Sun Devils Host Hot UCLA Saturday At 2 p.m.

The Sun Devil men's hoops team (15-4; 4-2) hosts super-hot UCLA on Saturday (Jan. 26) at 2 p.m. MT on FOX Sports Net (620 AM/Sirius 94/XM 190). ASU won a wild 98-93 overtime track meet Thursday that ended around 11 p.m. that saw USC make 15-of-28 three-pointers, tied for the second-most by an ASU opponent in history, as the Sun Devils won their third straight vs. USC for the first time since it won four straight vs. the Trojans during 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons (yes, that is right, around 30 years).
Only one other player in the nation is averaging what Jahii Carson is in minutes (36.4), points (17.5) and assists (5.3)...senior Nate Wolters of South Dakota State (37.4/20.7/5.8).

He is averaging 12.7 points per game in 82 career games. After starting the year 7-of-34 (.206) from the three-point stripe in first six games he has made 30-of-74 (.405) in past 13. He had 17 points at Oregon, 14 vs. Arizona and 21 vs. USC in his past three games. His 29-point effort vs. Sacramento State on Dec. 1 is a career high including his two years at Liberty as he has 11 20-point games. ASU has 138 blocks in 19 games (7.26 per game) which enters this week as fourth in the nation and opponents have taken 1,169 shots so that means every 8.5 field goal attempt gets blocked by a Sun Devil...junior Jordan Bachynski has 80 blocks (4.2 PG) which is more than last year's Pac-12 leader, Eric Moreland of Oregon State, had all season (69/1.9 bpg)...in the first 41 games of his career Jordan Bachynskishot 42-of-88 (.478) from field. In the past 32 games he is 118-193 (.612)...ASU has 138 blocks on the year, the most by a Sun Devil squad since the 2002-03 NCAA Tournament team had 139, which is sixth in Sun Devil history.
UCLA SERIES
ASU is 3-5 against UCLA in past eight after losing eight straight...Sun Devils and Bruins split a pair in 2009-10 and UCLA swept ASU the past two seasons...ASU swept Bruins in 2008-09 for the first time since 2002-03 and for just the third time in the program's history.
JAHII
Jahii Carson, with 20 points at Oregon State (Jan. 10) and at Oregon (Jan. 13), became the first Sun Devil freshman to get back-to-back 20-point games on a Pac-12 road trip since Steve Beck in the Bay Area on March 1-3, 1984. Beck had four 20-point games in Pac-12 road games, as did James Harden (2007-08), Ike Diogu(2002-03) and Jamal Faulkner (1990-91), but none of that trio did it on the same Pac-12 road weekend.
GILLING AND ABLE
Sophomore Jonathan Gillinghas 134 rebounds (7.1 per game) after posting 54 all of last season. He has made 19 three-pointers in the past eight games. He had had 18 points at Texas Tech on Dec. 22 and 14 at Oregon State on Jan. 10 and vs. Coppin State on Dec. 29. He also has three double-doubles on the year with 13/11 vs. USC on Jan. 24, 12/10 against Colorado on Jan. 6 and 13/15 vs. Florida A&M on Nov. 18.
SHOOT THEN DEFEND
ASU has outshot the opponent in eight of the past nine games. ASU is 100-22 (.818) under Coach Sendek when it outshoots the opponent, with the Oregon game the first loss of the year (14-1).
JORDAN BLOCK-SHYNSKI
In the first six seasons (197 games) of Coach Sendek's ASU tenure, ASU had nine blocks in a game four times. It has had at least nine blocks eight times this season. An overlooked block statistic for Jordan is keeping it in play. Of his 80 blocks, 47 have resulted in direct possessions for ASU. He has now 141 career blocks. The Sun Devil career record is 191 (Mario Bennett from 1991-95).

ASU is now 8-4 in overtime under Coach Sendek after its 55-54 win over Utah on Jan. 2 and its 98-93 track meet win vs. USC on Jan. 24. Many say that a two-possession game (six points) is a close game, and if you go by that ASU is 30-23 (.566) in those contests in the past six seasons.
CARRICK UPDATE
Carrick Felix (B.S., Communications 2012) is averaging 15.4 points and 8.4 rebounds in past 14 games and has scored in double digits 17 out of 19 games on the year..nine 20-point games and four this year (24 vs. Arkansas, 21 vs. Sacramento St. and vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and 20 vs. Colorado)...after not having a double-double in the first 65 career games he posted them in back-to-back games with 11 points and 11 boards vs. Hartford (Dec. 5) and 21 points/12 boards vs. Sacramento St. (Dec. 1) and now has six in past 13 games...earned Pac-12 Player of the Week after home sweep of Utah (Jan. 2) and Colorado (Jan. 6), his second such honor of the year.
