LOS ANGELES - Bryce Alford scored a team-leading 22 points to help lift UCLA past San Diego, 75-68, in a non-conference game in Pauley Pavilion on Sunday evening.
The Bruins (7-2) won their sixth consecutive home game, as Alford and freshman Kevon Looney each scored in double figures for the ninth time in as many games this season. Looney finished with his sixth double-double in nine games, totaling 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
UCLA has won its six home games by an average of 21.6 points, although the visiting Toreros (4-5) provided the Bruins with their closest game yet at Pauley Pavilion. San Diego led at halftime, 35-33, and had a four-point cushion early in the second half.
Johnny Dee led the Toreros with 22 points, connecting of 7 of 13 shots (including 4 of 10 from 3-point range). Brandon Perry finished with 16 points as USD’s only other player to score in double figures.
After UCLA took the lead on multiple occasions early in the second half, San Diego responded by tying the game. Isaac Hamilton’s three-pointer with14:56 remaining put UCLA ahead, 42-39. Dee answered nearly one minute later with a 3-pointer to tie the game, 42-42. A dunk by Tony Parker with 13:20 to play gave UCLA the lead for good, at 44-42. The Bruins pushed their advantage to nine points over the next four minutes, leading 52-43 with 9:54 remaining in the contest.
San Diego kept the margin close, cutting UCLA’s cushion to five points (54-49) on a three-pointer from Duda Sanadze with 8:29 left in the game. From that point, the Bruins stretched their lead to as many as 10 points before the Toreros answered, trimming UCLA’s lead to 70-66 at the 1:29 mark.
Norman Powell’s 3-pointer with 53 seconds to play in regulation gave UCLA a seven-point advantage to help secure the non-conference win.
Powell finished with 16 points and three steals in 29 minutes.
UCLA out-rebounded San Diego by a 37-33 tally, finishing the game with 17 assists and 11 turnovers. The Bruins shot 48.1 percent from the field, the team’s highest overall field goal percentage since defeating Nicholls State on Nov. 20, when UCLA shot 55.9 percent.
UCLA returns to action against UC Riverside on Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Pauley Pavilion. Game time is 8 p.m. The UCLA women’s basketball team will host UC Riverside at 5 p.m. as part of a women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader that evening.
