LOS ANGELES - Norman Powell scored a game-high 18 points to lead UCLA past Cal State Fullerton, 73-45, in a non-conference game in Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday night.
Powell led a group of five UCLA players who scored in double figures. Bryce Alford had 14 points, while Kevon Looneyfinished with 10 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Isaac Hamilton and Tony Parker each scored 12 points in the Bruins’ 28-point win.
Alford and Looney scored in double figures for the eighth time in as many games. Looney, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Milwaukee, Wis., logged his Pac-12-leading fifth double-double and has now averaged 13.6 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
"I was really pleased with the team tonight," UCLA head coach Steve Alford said. "We talked about this being a big trap game because of the respect we have for Cal State Fullerton and what they’ve already done on the road. We knew this wasn’t just their first road game. It’s never easy when you come back from a trip."
Playing in its first game since returning from the Bahamas on Saturday evening, UCLA (6-2) held the visiting Titans (3-5) to just 24.1 percent shooting from the field. Cal State Fullerton made just four of 20 three-point field goal attempts. In addition, the Bruins won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Cal State Fullerton by a 50-34 margin.
Cal State Fullerton’s Alex Harris was the lone Titan to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points after making just four of 16 shots from the field.
The Bruins led from the start and pushed their advantage to 11 points in the game’s first six minutes, securing a 15-4 cushion after Tony Parker made his third basket in as many attempts.
UCLA extended its advantage to 40-23 by halftime. Leading 33-22 with 2:38 to play before halftime, UCLA closed the first half with a 7-1 scoring run.
Parker scored all 12 of his points in the first half, connecting on six of seven field goal attempts before intermission.
UCLA’s lead never fell to fewer than 13 points in the second half. After Cal State Fullerton closed the gap to 44-31 on a three-point basket by Moses Morgan with 16:29 to play, the Bruins used a 16-3 scoring run to open a 60-34 cushion.
The Bruins pushed their advantage to as many as 28 points when reserve guard Kory Alford nailed a three-pointer with 1:04 remaining in regulation.
UCLA returns to action in Pauley Pavilion against San Diego (4-3) on Sunday, Dec. 7. Game time is 4 p.m. (PT). The Bruins’ contest will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
