BOSTON - UCLA forward Kevon Looney has been selected as one of 21 finalists for the 2015 Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year Award, as announced Monday by CollegeInsder.com.
Looney, a 6-foot-9 freshman hailing from Milwaukee, Wis., concluded his first season at UCLA averaging 11.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, the second-highest rebounding average among all freshmen in the nation.
Looney led all freshmen in the country with 15 double-doubles, the second-highest total among all Pac-12 players (behind Washington State’s Josh Hawkinson). Looney’s 9.2 rebounds per game is the second-highest average among freshman at UCLA, all-time, only trailing current NBA standout Kevin Love (10.6 rpg in 2007-08).
A second-team All-Pac-12 selection, Looney registered a season-high 27 points and 19 rebounds in UCLA’s 86-81 double overtime win over Stanford in Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 8. He registered at least 10 rebounds in 16 games during his freshman campaign.
UCLA concluded its 2014-15 season with a 22-14 record, advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season. The Bruins went 11-7 in Pac-12 play, finishing fourth in the regular-season conference standings.
