SAN FRANCISCO – UCLA freshman forward Kevon Looney has earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors after having averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in the Bruins’ two home wins against Stanford and California last week.
Looney, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Milwaukee, Wis., recorded season highs with 27 points and 19 rebounds in the Bruins’ 86-81 victory in double overtime against Stanford last Thursday. In that contest, Looney became UCLA’s first player to total as many as 27 points and 19 rebounds in one game since Ed O’Bannon finished with 28 points and 19 rebounds on Feb. 26, 1994, in a win over Stanford.
Three days later, Looney scored a team-leading 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help lead UCLA past California, 73-54, in Pauley Pavilion.
Looney becomes the second UCLA player to have captured the weekly award this season, as Norman Powell was honored on Monday, Nov. 24.
Through 17 games this season, Looney is the only freshman in the nation currently averaging a double-double (13.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg). He ranks second among all Pac-12 players with 10.3 rebounds per game and has totaled eight double-doubles.
UCLA (10-7, 2-2 Pac-12) returns to action at USC (9-7, 1-3 Pac-12) on Wednesday evening at the Trojans’ Galen Center. Game time is 6 p.m. (PT). The crosstown showdown will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
