ON DECK FOR THE BRUINS
Including this Saturday afternoon’s game at Oregon, the Bruins will have opened their Pac-12 schedule with five of their first seven contests on the road. Last season, UCLA earned a 70-68 victory at Oregon, as Travis Wear hit a putback with 5.3 seconds left to snap a 68-68 tie and the Bruins held on for the road victory. In all, UCLA went 2-1 against the Ducks last season, including an 82-63 victory in a quarterfinal matchup of the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.
OREGON AT A GLANCE
Under the direction of head coach Dana Altman (fifth season as Oregon’s head coach), the Ducks have compiled a 13-6 record this season, including a 3-3 mark in Pac-12 action. Joseph Young leads the team with 19.4 points per game and has also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Dillon Brooks (13.4 ppg) and Elgin Cook (11.9 ppg) are Oregon’s two other players averaging in double figures.
LOOKING BACK AT THURSDAY
UCLA’s three-game win streak ended with a 66-55 loss at Oregon State on Thursday night. Bryce Alford scored a team-leading 18 points, and Norman Powell registered his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Oregon State entered halftime with a 29-19 lead and pushed its margin to as wide as 47-30 with 9:28 to play. UCLA used a 20-5 scoring run to reduce OSU’s cushion to just two points (52-50), keyed by a deep two-pointer by G.G. Goloman (5:01) and a layup from Goloman (2:36) at the end of that scoring run.
SUCCESSFUL FRESHMAN
Kevon Looney is the nation’s only freshman to be averaging a double-double (12.8 ppg, 10.3 rpg). Looney has tallied 10 double-doubles in 19 games. In comparison, UCLA’s Kyle Anderson had eight double-doubles as a freshman (2012-13) and 16 last season. Looney finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds at Oregon State on Thursday. He tallied season-highs of 27 points and 19 rebounds against Stanford (Jan. 8), marking the first time any UCLA player had finished with 27 points and 19 rebounds since Feb. 26, 1994 (Ed O’Bannon had 28 points and 19 rebounds).
UCLA’S TOP SCORER
Bryce Alford ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in scoring (15.8 points per game) and has dished a team-leading 5.7 assists per game (fourth in the Pac-12). Alford, a 6-foot-3 guard from Albuquerque, N.M., has scored in double figures in 17 of UCLA’s 19 games. He ranks second in the Pac-12 in minutes per game (35.9), third in free throw percentage (88.5 pct, 69-of-78), third in three-pointers made per game (2.5) and fifth in assist turnover ratio (2.2). In UCLA’s last two games (at USC and at Oregon State), Alford has averaged 19.5 points per game.
FRONTCOURT FRESHMEN
Freshmen Thomas Welsh and G.G. Goloman have made a strong impact for the Bruins in Pac-12 play. Welsh, who earned his first career start on Thursday in place of the injured Tony Parker (back spasms, day-to-day), totaled eight points and five rebounds at Oregon State. Welsh, a 7-foot center from Redondo Beach, Calif., also had eight points and four rebounds at USC on Jan. 14. Goloman, a 6-foot-10 forward originally from Körmend, Hungary, scored a season-high six points at Oregon State on Thursday and totaled a season-best four steals.
1,000 POINTS
Senior Norman Powell currently ranks No. 45 on UCLA’s all-time scoring list. Powell, a 6-foot-4 guard from San Diego, became the 51st player in program history to have reached the 1,000 career point mark in UCLA’s game at Colorado (Jan. 2). He has scored 1,072 career points (8.6 ppg) and is just three games shy of reaching UCLA’s top-10 list for all-time games played. Powell tied his career-high with 10 rebounds at Oregon State on Tuesday, having also grabbed 10 rebounds in a non-conference win against UC Davis during his freshman season.
STRONG IMPROVEMENT
Powell has averaged 12.7 points per game over his junior and senior years after having logged 5.3 points per game during his first two collegiate seasons. His ability to get to the free throw line has improved tremendously. Powell made 36 of 55 free throw shots (65.5 pct) during his first two seasons, but has made 157 of 208 free throw attempts (75.5 pct) over the last two years.
DOWN THE ROAD
UCLA returns home for a pair of games against No. 12-ranked Utah and Colorado in Pauley Pavilion next week. The Bruins will face Utah on Thursday, Jan. 29, before taking on Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Bruins will have played five of their first seven games on the road, including a road trip to Colorado (Jan. 2) and Utah (Jan. 4). UCLA absorbed a 62-56 loss at Colorado in both teams’ Pac-12 opener earlier this month. Two days later, the Bruins dropped a 71-39 decision at then-No. 10-ranked Utah on a Sunday afternoon at the Huntsman Center.
