LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)—Mario Little hit a free throw with seven-tenths of a second remaining, lifting No. 4 Kansas to a pulsating 77-76 victory over UCLA on Thursday night, extending the Jayhawks’ team-record string of homecourt wins.

AP - Dec 2, 9:30 pm EST

Tyler Honeycutt had 33 points for UCLA, including a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go that tied the score between two of basketball’s most storied programs at 76-76.

But Malcom Lee was called for a foul when Little attempted a desperation heave and the officials, after conferring at the scorer’s table, sent him to the line.

He made the first foul shot but missed the second. Honeycutt’s cross-court hurl toward the UCLA basket was off line, giving the Jayhawks (7-0) their narrowest victory in a 64-game home court winning streak.

Joshua Smith, the 305-pound center for the Bruins (3-3), made life miserable for the Jayhawks inside and had 17 points (and 13 rebounds).

Ben Bolch, reporting from Lawrence, Kan.

It was nearly the night the lights went out in Kansas.

UCLA put the Jayhawks' epic home winning streak in serious jeopardy, with Bruins sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt making a three-pointer with four seconds left to tie the score.

But Malcolm Lee fouled Mario Little with seven-tenths of a second left, Little made the first of two free throws and Kansas held on for a 77-76 victory that stretched its school-record winning streak on its home floor to 64 games.

Honeycutt finished with a career-high 33 points, including a pair of four-point plays.

KU fights off tough UCLA squad in 77-76 win
By J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH
The Kansas City Star

LAWRENCE | Fighting for the life of their nation's-best and school-record home-court winning streak, the Kansas Jayhawks fended off a determined and tough UCLA squad 77-76 on Thursday night with a little bit of Allen Fieldhouse magic.

KU blew a seven-point lead with 3 minutes left when Tyrel Reed, who was trying to draw a foul out of an inbounds play, threw the ball away to UCLA's Tyler Honeycutt.

Honeycutt, who finished with 33 points, worked the clock down and swished a 3-pointer to tie the game at 76 with 4 seconds to play. Marcus Morris ran the ball up the floor, lost it, and Mario Little picked it up and hurled a desperation shot. It missed, but officials ruled that Little had been fouled by UCLA's Malcolm Lee with 0.7 seconds left. Little would get two free throws, making the first and sealing Kansas' 64th straight win at Allen Fieldhouse.

No. 4 KU, now 7-0, thought it had the win secured after an 8-0 run late in the second half turned a 64-60 UCLA lead into a 68-64 Jayhawk advantage. Tyshawn Taylor scored the first six, while the Morris twins provided the exclamation point that brought down the fieldhouse.

Markieff Morris grabbed a loose ball and flipped a one-handed pass up the floor directly into the hands of the streaking Marcus, who threw in a one-handed slam. Certainly, it was something the brothers had practiced many times on the playground growing up in Philadelphia, where both fashioned themselves as football players in their early years.

This was not KU's finest performance. The Jayhawks made just 53 percent (16 of 30) of their free throws and allowed the Bruins to shoot 48 percent from the field. KU was outrebounded by a bigger and more aggressive UCLA front line 37-32.

Tyrel Reed and Taylor led the Jayhawks with 17 points, while Marcus Morris had 16.

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Mario Little hit a free throw with seven-tenths of a second remaining, lifting No. 4 Kansas to a 77-76 victory over UCLA on Thursday night, extending the Jayhawks' team-record string of homecourt wins.

Tyler Honeycutt had 33 points for UCLA, including a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go that tied the score between two of basketball's most storied programs at 76-76.

But Malcom Lee was called for a foul when Little attempted a desperation heave and the officials, after conferring at the scorer's table, sent him to the line.

He made the first foul shot but missed the second. Honeycutt's crosscourt hurl toward the UCLA basket was off line, giving the Jayhawks (7-0) their narrowest victory in a 64-game home court winning streak. It was one of the few times all night that Honeycutt missed. He was 11 for 15 from the floor and 5 for 6 from the 3-point line.

Tyshawn Taylor and Tyrel Reed both had 17 points for Kansas.

Joshua Smith, the 305-pound center for the Bruins (3-3), made life miserable for the Jayhawks inside and had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Smith's basket pulled the Bruins to 75-73 with 37 seconds to go, then Taylor, with 29.2seconds left, missed his first free throw but made the second and Kansas led 76-73.

With 19.6 seconds left, and a capacity crowd imploring the Jayhawks not to let the home streak end, Kansas' Marcus Morris missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The ball got tied up with the possession arrow pointing Kansas' way and the Jayhawks inbounded with 18 seconds left.

Reed, Kansas' best foul shooter, got the ball, but coughed it up in heavy traffic and Honeycutt canned his fifth 3-pointer for the tie.

Kansas was only 16 of 30 from the free throw line and got outrebounded -- something that rarely happens in Allen Fieldhouse -- 37-32.

All night long, it was a game of spurts before Kansas finally took a 70-66 lead on Marcus Morris' basket.

With 3:43 left, Marcus Morris was fouled by Lee and made one of two free throws, making the Jayhawks 1 for their last 4 from the line, but giving them a 71-66 lead.

A moment later, UCLA's Jerime Anderson threw the ball out of bounds and the Bruins called time out with 3:14 left.

At the 2:34 mark, Honeycutt scored inside, was fouled by Markieff Morris and made the free throw, slicing the lead to 73-69.

A few seconds later, Brendan Lane's fifth foul sent Marcus Morris back to the line, where he made both, giving the Jayhawks a 75-69 lead.

Marcus Morris had 16 points for Kansas and his brother Markieff had nine points and nine rebounds.
