LOS ANGELES – Thomas Welsh registered 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 18 UCLA past Cal State Los Angeles, 111-80, in an exhibition game on Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion.
Seven Bruins scored in double figures in UCLA's first and only exhibition game of the preseason season. Jaylen Handsfinished just one rebound shy of a triple-double, notching 12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.
Kris Wilkes had 14 points and six rebounds, while G.G. Goloman scored 13 points, Aaron Holiday and LiAngelo Ball each had 11, and Prince Ali totaled 10.
"I really liked what our guys were able to do," said UCLA head coach Steve Alford. "We talked about some adjustments at halftime, and I thought we had a really solid half. With those adjustments, we had only given up one offensive rebound and one turnover. Those were positives. The last six or seven minutes is where we had our turnovers, but it was a 40-point game."
Welsh nailed 10 of 13 shots, making each of his two three-point field goal attempts. The senior from Redondo Beach, Calif., also had three blocks in just 21 minutes on the floor.
"Both Thomas and G.G. [Goloman] were really good," Alford said. "I thought they did a lot of good things. Tom is making shots now – he's making some threes. You're going to continue to see a 7-foot-1 guy who can hurt you at the rim and also from 21 to 22 feet."
Cal State L.A.'s Jihad Woods finished with a team-leading 16 points, connecting on 8 of 13 shots.
UCLA led the visiting Golden Eagles, 50-34, at halftime and used a 20-2 scoring run within the first six minutes of the second half to secure a 32-point lead, at 70-32, with 14:24 to go.
The Bruins extended their advantage to as many as 45 points within the game's final four minutes.
Overall, UCLA shot nearly 64 percent from the field and was 9-for-19 (47.4%) from three-point distance. The Bruins limited Cal State L.A. to 36.1 percent shooting in the exhibition victory.
Ranked No. 18 in the preseason USA Today coaches poll and No. 21 in the preseason AP poll, UCLA will open its regular season against Georgia Tech in Shanghai, China on Friday, Nov. 10. The game will be nationally televised at 8:30 p.m. that Friday evening on the West Coast (that's 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in Shanghai).
UCLA departs for Shanghai on Saturday, Nov. 4, and will return to Los Angeles on Saturday, Nov. 11. Following the game in China, the Bruins will host Central Arkansas on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Pauley Pavilion. Game time is 8 p.m. (PT).
