SAN FRANCISCO - UCLA senior guard Norman Powell has earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors while freshman forward Kevon Looney has been named a second-team All-Pac-12 selection, as announced by the conference on Monday.
In addition, sophomore guard Bryce Alford has secured honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors. Looney has been named as one of seven Pac-12 All-Freshmen Team selections.
Powell, named an honorable mention Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection for the second straight year, averaged a team-leading 16.3 points per game, the sixth-highest average in the Pac-12. He scored in double figures in 26 of 31 games and notched at least 20 points in 13 games. Powell has played in all 136 games for UCLA over the last four seasons, the fifth-highest games played total in program history.
Looney, a 6-foot-9 forward from Milwaukee, Wis., has averaged 12.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and has started in all 31 contests. He has totaled 14 double-doubles, the second-highest total among Pac-12 players and the highest double-double total of any freshman in the country. Looney’s 14 double-doubles are the most by any Pac-12 freshman since UCLA’s Kevin Love had 23 in 2007-08.
Looney and Arizona’s Stanley Johnson (first team) are the only two freshmen in the conference named among the 10 first-team or five second-team selections.
Alford, a 6-foot-3 guard from Albuquerque, N.M., has registered 15.3 points and 5.1 assists per game and has started all 31 contests. He is one of just two players in the Pac-12 (along with Washington’s Nigel Williams-Goss) to ranked among the top 10 in scoring and top five in assists per game. Alford has scored in double figures in 26 of 31 games, scoring at least 20 points in seven games.
The All-Pac-12 Team consists of 10 first-team selections and five second-team selections with honorable mention candidates having received at least three votes. The All-Freshmen and All-Defensive teams include five players each.
Oregon guard Joseph Young secured Pac-12 Player of the Year honors, while Arizona forward Stanley Johnson captured Pac-12 Freshman of the Year accolades. Oregon State guard Gary Payton II was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, and Washington State’s Josh Hawkinson was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Oregon head coach Dana Altman was named the Pac-12’s John Wooden Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
