WHAT’S NEXT
UCLA opens the second half of its Pac-12 schedule with Thursday’s game at Stanford. The Bruins earned an 86-81 victory in double overtime against Stanford on Jan. 8 in Pauley Pavilion. In that game, UCLA overcame a 14-point deficit in the final 10 minutes, as freshman Kevon Looney totaled season highs with 27 points and 19 rebounds. UCLA has won eight of its last 10 games against Stanford. The Bruins, who last won at Maples Pavilion on Feb. 16, 2013, have won five of their previous eight games at Stanford.
POWELL’S PRODUCTION
Norman Powell earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Monday after having averaged 22.5 points in the Bruins’ two Pac-12 wins last week. Powell scored 23 points in the team’s 69-59 victory over No. 11-ranked Utah on Thursday. He followed that performance with a 22-point game in a 72-59 win against Colorado on Saturday night. Powell, who ranks sixth in the Pac-12 with 16.1 points per game, has scored at least 20 points in UCLA’s last three games (first time in his career with at least three consecutive 20+ point games).
BRUINS DEFEAT COLORADO
Three UCLA players scored in double figures last Saturday, led by Norman Powell’s 22-point game, as the Bruins cruised past Colorado, 72-59. UCLA led at halftime by a 27-23 margin, but used a 14-0 scoring run midway through the second half to secure a 21-point lead (58-37) at the 6:30 mark. Kevon Looney notched his team-leading 11th double-double of the season (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Isaac Hamilton finished with 12 points and five rebounds. UCLA shot 48.1 percent from the field and 82.6 percent (19-for-23) from the free throw line.
PICKING THEIR POCKET
UCLA enters the week tied with Arizona for the Pac-12 lead in steals per game (7.5, 165 steals in 22 games). The Bruins have logged a league-leading 7.6 steals per game (68 steals, nine games) in Pac-12 contests. UCLA finished with 10 steals in Saturday’s win against Colorado (the Buffaloes have surrendered 10 or more steals in three games this season, twice against UCLA). Norman Powell ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with 2.1 steals per game (47 steals, 22 games), while Kevon Looney currently ranks 10th with 1.4 steals per game.
FRESHMAN STANDOUT
Kevon Looney is the nation’s only freshman to be averaging a double-double (12.7 ppg, 10.0 rpg). He leads all freshmen in the nation with 11 double-doubles in 22 games (second-highest double-double total in the Pac-12). In comparison, UCLA’s Kyle Anderson had eight double-doubles as a freshman (2012-13) and 16 last season. Looney has scored in double figures in six of the Bruins’ last seven contests. He tallied season-highs of 27 points and 19 rebounds in UCLA’s 86-81 double overtime victory against Stanford in Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 8.
POINTS AND ASSISTS
Bryce Alford ranks eighth in the Pac-12 in scoring (15.6 ppg) and has dished a team-leading 5.6 assists per game (fourth in the Pac-12). The 6-foot-3 guard from Albuquerque, N.M., has scored in double figures in 19 of 22 games. He is one of two Pac-12 players (along with Washington’s Nigel Williams-Goss) to rank among the top 10 in scoring and top five in assists per game. In addition, he ranks second in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (89.5 pct, 77-for-86), third in 3-pointers made per game (2.4) and fifth in assist turnover ratio (2.2).
FRONTCOURT FRESHMEN
Freshmen Thomas Welsh and G.G. Goloman have made a strong impact for the Bruins in Pac-12 play. Welsh, who started UCLA’s games at Oregon State (Jan. 22) and Oregon (Jan. 24), finished with seven points against Utah on Jan. 29 (shooting 3-for-3 from the field). The Bruins’ 7-foot center from Redondo Beach, Calif., also had eight points and four rebounds at USC (Jan. 14). Goloman, a 6-foot-10 forward who grew up in Körmend, Hungary, scored a season-high six points and totaled a season-best four steals in UCLA’s loss at Oregon State on Jan. 22.
CLIMBING THE CHART
Norman Powell has played in all 127 games for UCLA since the start of the 2011-12 season. Powell, who has averaged 9.0 points per game in his career, is tied with three other players for ninth place on UCLA’s all-time games played list (Jason Kapono, J.R. Henderson and Don MacLean). Michael Roll ranks first on the list (147), followed by Darren Collison and Alfred Aboya (142). Powell’s career total of 139 steals stands just seven shy of cracking the program’s top-10 career steals list (Ed O’Bannon and Gerald Madkins are tied for 10th place with 146).
