BRUINS DEFEAT TITANS
Five UCLA players scored in double figures last Wednesday evening as the Bruins cruised past Cal State Fullerton, 73-45, in Pauley Pavilion. Norman Powell scored a team-leading 18 points, and Kevon Looney recorded his fifth double-double in eight games (10 points, team-high 13 rebounds). UCLA led Cal State Fullerton at halftime by a 40-23 margin and never saw its lead fall to fewer than 13 points in the non-conference win.
LOONEY’S STRONG START
Freshman Kevon Looney ranked seventh in the nation in rebounding (11.3 rpg) through games played Wednesday. The 6-foot-9 forward leads all Pac-12 players in that category and ranking fifth, nationally, in offensive rebounds per game (4.5 offensive rpg). Looney leads all freshmen in the nation with five double-doubles (in eight games). He has scored in double figures in all eight contests and ranks third on the team with 13.6 points per game.
MAKING AN IMPACT
Looney became UCLA’s first player to log double-doubles in four of his first five games as a freshman at UCLA. After finishing with 20 points and nine rebounds in the team’s season opener, he recorded four consecutive double-doubles (including 16 points and 15 rebounds versus Oklahoma). In addition, Looney is one of just four Bruins in the last 22 seasons to have recorded a double-double in either of his first two games as a freshman. Charles O’Bannon (Nov. 27, 1993), Kevin Love (Nov. 8, 2007) and Kyle Anderson (Nov. 9, 2012) had double-doubles in their first games as UCLA freshmen.
SENIOR LEADER
Senior Norman Powell has averaged a team-leading 17.9 points per game in eight contests. The 6-foot-4 guard from San Diego has led UCLA in scoring in four games, having logged a season-high 25 points in the season-opening win over Montana State (Nov. 14). Powell ranks second among Pac-12 players in scoring (17.9 ppg) and steals (2.4 spg). He led UCLA with 18 points in the team’s 28-point win over Cal State Fullerton last Wednesday evening.
SCORE AND DISTRIBUTE
Sophomore Bryce Alford has averaged 17.6 points per game (fourth in the Pac-12) and ranks second among Pac-12 players with 7.1 assists per game. Alford, who has scored in double figures in all eight games, has recorded the fourth-best assist-turnover ratio (2.9) of any Pac-12 player. He already has two of the three highest single-game assist totals in the Pac-12 this season (including a conference-best 13 assists against Nicholls State on Nov. 20).
UCLA’S FRONTCOURT LENGTH
The Bruins’ frontcourt features five players who each stand at least 6-foot-9 or taller. In addition to starters Kevon Looney (6-foot-9, 13.6 ppg, 11.3 rpg) and Tony Parker (6-foot-9, 11.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg), the Bruins have utilized Thomas Welsh (7-foot-0), Wanaah Bail (6-foot-9) and G.G. Goloman (6-foot-10) off the bench through the season’s first eight games. Welsh has made the most significant impact off the bench, averaging 5.8 ppg and 4.8 rpg.
PARKER’S PROGRESSION
Junior Tony Parker has averaged 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, having made significant strides in each of three seasons. After having logged 6.3 minutes per game as a freshman (2012-13), he finished his sophomore year (2013-14) with 6.9 points and 4.4 points in 17.2 minutes per game. He started UCLA’s first nine games last season while Travis Wear recovered from an appendectomy and has started all eight games this season. Parker, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., scored 12 points and added nine rebounds Wednesday against Cal State Fullerton.
WHAT’S NEXT
UCLA will host UC Riverside on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins’ game that evening will follow a matchup between the UCLA and UC Riverside women’s basketball teams (tipoff for that game is at 5 p.m.). The men’s basketball team will also host No. 9 Gonzaga next week on Saturday, Dec. 13. UCLA's meeting versus Gonzaga is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
